With the no. 144 / 20-5-1996 Presidential Decree (Government Gazette 110 / 10-6-96, vol. B) the “Laboratory of Special and Therapeutic Education” was established, in the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University of Ioannina which serves educational and research needs in the subjects of special and therapeutic education of children, adolescents and adults. Especially pedagogical and psycho-pedagogical intervention at the levels of education, training, professional and social integration of people with disabilities.
The term “treatment” means the techniques and methods of therapeutic intervention and support of educational and social work in places such as the family, schools where people with special needs are included (learning difficulties in writing, reading, mathematics, etc., dyslexia, special classes), special kindergartens, special schools, special vocational schools, clinics and special adult shops (pdf file).

The Laboratory conducts research on various aspects of cognitive development (mainly those related to general cognitive ability / intelligence and charisma) as well as social development. The research of the Laboratory concerns lifelong development and the samples of the individual researches of the members of the Laboratory have included children of early and middle childhood, adolescents, emerging adults, young adults, middle-age people and the elderly. With the no. 182 Presidential Decree (Government Gazette 144 / 12-6-2003) the Laboratory of New Technologies and Distance Education was established in the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University of Ioannina, which serves educational and research needs in the subjects of informatics, educational programs with the use computers and scientific research methodology.

With the Government Gazette 2074/04-06-2019, vol. Β΄ the Laboratory of Human Rights and Interpersonal Relations was established. The workshop serves teaching and research needs in the field of Human Rights and Interpersonal Relations. In particular, the activities of the laboratory aim at promoting the values of Human Rights at all levels of education by involving various systems of interpersonal relationships (family, school, workplace, community, society).

With the Presidential Decree 2137/07-06-2019, vol. Β΄ the Laboratory of Intercultural Education and Differentiated Pedagogy was established.
The Laboratory entitled “Intercultural Education & Differentiated Pedagogy” will serve: academic and research needs, development of educational and training material, teacher training, supervision of internships for undergraduate students. The fields of research and intervention of the laboratory are: Ethnocultural and linguistic heterogeneity and diversity, Stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination based on ethnic, cultural, linguistic, gender identity. Differentiated pedagogy and critical pedagogy. The main field of reference of the research and pedagogical activities of the laboratory is primarily the educational space, but also the wider social environment in which they are included and from which the educational practices and perceptions are determined.

With the Government Gazette 2162/07-6-2019, vol. Β΄ the Laboratory of Science Education, Math Education and Education for Sustainability was established. The laboratory serves teaching and research needs in the subjects of Mathematics Education, Science Education and Education for Sustainable Development (Sustainability) and consists of the following two research units:

The Laboratory supports a) the academic and professional development of undergraduate and postgraduate students of the ECEDU, as well as their internship and b) the professional development of active teachers. In the field of research, the Laboratory conducts basic and applied research in the field where its subject falls at a national and international level. Finally, the Laboratory supports the publication of the bilingual international journal Science Teaching: Research and Practice – Science Education Research and Praxis (research group @fise group), as well as the journal of the Association of Researchers of Mathematics Education (Mathematics Education Unit).

The Laboratory of Arts, Human Kinetic and Teaching Implementation of the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University of Ioannina was established with the Government Gazette 1563 / 24-04-2020 vol. B’ and serves the research and teaching needs on the cognitive objects of arts and human kinetics. The laboratory contributes to the theoretical reinforcement and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Pedagogical Department of Kindergarten Teachers, as well as other Departments of the University, in matters of the field of arts, human kinetics and their teaching implementation. At the same time, it aims to enhance ways of artistic expression, as well as the production of appropriate artistic and pedagogical material with multiple possibilities of application and the promotion of good practices.
